Exeter 8 Tabor 4
Marion, MA , Saturday, May 2nd - To stop our 2-game losing streak, Exeter has been emphasizing the fundamentals of ground balls, competing hard with intensity all over the field, passing and catching cleanly, solid fundamental team defense, and controlling the pace and possession of the ball. Exeter did all of those things against a very scrappy and tough Tabor team to come away with a hard earned 8-4 victory. Although it was not until the 2nd half that the offense started scoring, it was only a matter of time before doing all the other important things well would start to pay dividends. Although there were many award winning performances, the game ball is awarded to Tom Jardine for epitomizing all the things we emphasized during the week. Tom played excellent short-stick defense all day whether against a tough middie matchup or switching to an attackman and allowing an extra pole to play up top. Tom was also key on ground balls and clearing the ball to our offensive zone. Doing all the fundamentals correctly makes a huge difference that does not usually show up in the scorebook. The long pole unit of Matt Callahan, Alex Akoto, Adrien Fogelquist, Ryan Breen, and Jeff Reppucci played outstanding defense in front of goalie Tyler Page. They held Tabor to limited shot selections and also cleared the ball well. Mike Sotak really fought hard to win the faceoff battle against a very tough Tabor player, and Exeter's faceoff wing-play was also much improved. On offense, Eric Slingerland led the way with 4 goals and his usual outstanding play all over the field. Charlie Gill scored once and added 4 assists, while Patrick Johnson scored twice. Patrick's unassisted goal in the 3rd quarter was the spark that started the offensive engine that had been sputtering for most of the game until that point.
