Exeter 11   Portsmouth Abbey 6
Porstmouth Abbey , Saturday, April 11th - Despite missing some key players and playing on the road on a cold and rainy day against a very physical team, Exeter continues to stay unbeaten with a very solid 11-6 victory over Portsmouth Abbey. The field conditions were awful with mud everywhere and everyone's equipment soaked. Nevertheless, the young offense continues to surprise even the Exeter coaches and managed to tally 7 first half goals to build a 5 point halftime lead. Leading the way despite being double-teamed and triple-teamed was Eric Slingerland with three goals, while Charlie Gill scored twice, Patrick Johnson contributed one score and three assists, and game ball winner Cole Page scored his first two of the season in the first half. Cole not only scored two key goals, but he settled the ball nicely in transition, made good decisions, and worked hard on the ride. As always, the game is about ball control, and Mike Sotak's faceoff play with great work by wingman long pole Ryan Breen and various short stick middies made a huge difference. Ryan also played excellent defense in the midfield along with defenders Tom Jardine, Max Fenkell, and Mike Sotak, and really limited Abbey's middies to very few quality opportunities. Portsmouth Abbey played very hard and physical, especially with hard stick checks, and Exeter did a great job of maintaining poise and not getting rattled by some obvious missed penalty calls. With starter Jeff Reppucci out at defense and co-captain Max Cassidy missing from the starting midfield, the depth of the team was once again tested. Adrien Fogelquist played extremely well at close defense in Jeff's place, and Tyler Williams was outstanding running with the 1st midfield line. Tyler really showed his speed even under sloppy conditions as he raced past people on clears and scooping up ground balls. He also notched his first career goal in the 4th quarter off a Gabo Borunda assist. Gabo had his best offensive day with a goal and two nice assists. Once again, Matt Callahan and Alex Akoto played great close defense, and Matt scored his first career goal off of a fast break give and go from Patrick Johnson that resulted in Matt ripping a high hard one past the Abbey goalkeeper. Both Tyler Page and Sean Fujimori did a very nice job in the nets where crease conditions were very tough on solid footing. This was a very nice win.
