Exeter 10   Pomfret 4
Pomfret, CT Wednesday, April 15th - Exeter defeated Pomfret despite playing a rather lackluster and uninspiring game. The energy of the previous few contests was just not there, and certainly a two hour plus bus ride on a Wednesday had a lot to do with it. Nevertheless, one sign of a good team is to be able to win on the road when not playing your best, and Exeter did just that. Mike Sotak started things off just 10 seconds into the contest by alertly starting a fast break off a Pomfret faceoff infraction and assisting Eric Slingerland for a 1-0 lead. Game ball winner Gabo Borunda scored the only other first quarter goal for Exeter off an assist by Eric. Gabo ended the day with his first career hat trick and fine overall play in the midfield. Prep Charlie Gill also had a big offensive day with three goals and an assist, and it was Charlie and Eric who did most of the damage in the 2nd quarter. Charlie scored all his goals in the 2nd, and Eric contributed another goal and 2 assists. One of Charlie's goals was assisted beautifully by fast breaking Max Fenkell, who played his best lacrosse of the season on what was coincidentally his birthday. Exeter's defense led by Matt Cahalane was not particularly challenged and yielded just 1 goal at the 3 minute mark of the 2nd to make it a 6-1 halftime lead. It was nice to see Sam Gardner and Matt Hatch see some game action and play well as each continues to recover from injuries. Exeter played some of their best lacrosse in the 3rd quarter despite only earning a 3-1 edge. There were a few unlucky pipe shots that came off of nice offensive execution. The 4th period started off with a 3-minute stick penalty for Exeter and that sort of killed any momentum coming out of the 3rd. The man-down unit of Matt Hatch, Adrien Fogelquist, Ryan Breen, Alex Akoto, and Tom Jardine limited Pomfret to one goal despite being two men down for part of that time. Everyone played a lot in the 4th quarter and it all ended on a positive when Anthony Baker took a pass from Patrick Johnson and rocketed home his first career goal as the final horn sounded.
