Exeter 7   Nobles 5
Dedham, MA, Wednesday, April 1st - In another close contest similar to last year, Exeter defeated Nobles 7-5 for their first win of the 2009 season. Both teams have just started the season and the defenses seemed to be ahead of the offenses at this stage of the year. Both teams were shut out offensively during the entire first quarter. It was not until a couple of minutes into the 2nd quarter when game ball winner Eric Slingerland scored the first of his four goals on the day after a loose ball scramble in front of the net. Nobles scored twice to take the lead before Eric scored again off of a beautiful long clearing pass from goalie Tyler Page that led to a breakaway goal. Nobles went ahead 3-2 with less than a minute to play in the half on a man-up advantage situation goal. Exeter was able to gain possession and call a time out with little time left before the half. The offense ran a designed play to perfection and made the score a morale lifting 3-3 at halftime. The 3rd quarter was Exeter's best. Tyler and the defense of Alex Akoto, Matt Callahan, Jeff Reppucci, Ryan Breen, and short stick defenders Tom Jardine and Mike Sotak played magnificently as they completely shut down Nobles despite a lopsided time of possession and two more man-advantage situations for the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, Eric scored his 4th goal of the game unassisted and then followed it up by assisting Greg Jenkins just one minute later to make it a 5-3 game at the end of three quarters. With nine minutes left in the game, Nobles scored another man-advantage goal to trim the lead, but Charlie Gill answered almost immediately on a beautiful assist from Patrick Johnson. These were their first career points for what should be many to follow. Charlie returned the favor and assisted Patrick with four minutes to play and the score was now 7-4. Nobles was able to score once more with less than a minute to play for the final 7-5 score. Big kudos go out to faceoff man Mike Sotak who changed the flow of the game when he started winning faceoffs that had previously eluded Exeter earlier in the game. Middies Max Cassidy and Gabo Borunda played a lot of quality minutes at both ends of the field, and also deserve recognition. There is plenty to work on, but it was a very nice win to start the season.
