Exeter 9   Loomis 10 (OT)
Exeter, NH , Saturday, April 25th - Exeter was upset 10-9 in (OT) by an inspired Loomis Chaffee team on a hot sunny afternoon with a great crowd in attendance. Exeter just did not play their typically consistent game, particularly on defense, as they allowed the Pelicans to tie the game 9-9 with just 36 seconds remaining to play in regulation while playing man-down for their 7th time in the game. When Patrick Johnson scored his 2nd goal of the game off a Max Cassidy assist to put Exeter ahead with just 2 minutes to play, things looked good for Exeter to escape with a win despite a less than stellar performance. However, the inability to win face-offs and competitive groundballs which plagued Exeter all afternoon would turn out to be their undoing in the last two minutes and in overtime. Loomis not only won the crucial face-off at the 2-minute mark, but drew a penalty in the process. The man-down team shut Loomis down to erase the 30-second penalty only to pick up another 1-minute penalty with just over 1 minute left in the game. This time Loomis was able to score and tie the game to send it into overtime. Loomis won the overtime faceoff, came down the field and scored to complete the comeback upset without Exeter getting their hands on the ball. Exeter played uncharacteristically nervous and careless lacrosse in the first quarter and most of the 2nd quarter and went down 3-0 before Patrick Johnson broke the ice unassisted with just 4 minutes left until halftime. Tyler Page made several excellent saves in this first half to keep Exeter close. The Johnson goal sparked Exeter to three more unanswered goals as Eric Slingerland assisted Charlie Gill and then scored two of his own before halftime. The 4-3 halftime lead would become 6-3 and 7-4 in the 3rd quarter as Exeter continued to play well at both ends of the field. Mike Sotak scored his two goals during this stretch and Charlie Gill added another as Exeter built up the 3-goal lead. Exeter's midfield defense on Loomis' star player fell apart as he scored 3 of Loomis' next 4 unanswered goals to allow Loomis to take an 8-7lead. Exeter also had many great scoring opportunities during this stretch, but excellent Loomis goalkeeping and some poor shooting shut Exeter down for almost a quarter. Max Cassidy finally tied the game 8-8 off a great assist by Matt Callahan with just under 7 minutes to play to set up the nail biting finish. Hopefully Exeter will get their three starters missing this game healthy soon as they prepare for an undefeated Brewster team this Wednesday. Congratulations to Loomis for a well-played and well coached game. click here to see video highlights
