Exeter 10 KUA 9
Meriden, NH , Wednesday, May 6th -“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” Charles Dickens must have seen a game like the one Exeter played today versus KUA when he wrote these famous words. The Big Red played their best lacrosse of the season in the first half that included a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 7-1 lead at one time before going into halftime ahead 7-2. Exeter then proceeded to play their worst lacrosse of the season in the 3rd quarter when we gave up seven goals, six of them unanswered, and allowed a 7-2 lead to become a 9-8 deficit. Much of the credit goes to KUA for their perseverance, hard work, and domination of the ball, but fortunately Exeter played well again in the 4th by shutting out the potent KUA offense and managing to score two goals to win the game 10-9. It was an exciting game for the fans, but nerve racking for the coaches. KUA had some explosive offensive players at attack and in the midfield, and game ball winner Alex Akoto spent the day tracking their two most dangerous attackman, #13 Danforth in the first half, and #17 Wright in the 2nd half. While he of course received tremendous help from his fellow close defenseman Matt Callahan and Matt Hatch, Alex played his best lacrosse of the season in helping to limit these two excellent players to one goal apiece on the day, and one assist between them. Alex's great defense along with his ground ball work and clearing, were key elements in helping Exeter build the first half lead. Mike Sotak and wing play dominated the faceoff in the first half to enable the offense to continuously pressure KUA. The offense moved the ball unselfishly against the hard sliding KUA defense and this resulted in nine of the Exeter's ten goals being assisted. Leading the way on offense was Patrick Johnson's 4 goals including the game winner, Max Cassidy and Charlie Gill with 2 goals and 2 assists each, and Eric Slingerland with 3 assists and overall great play. Walker Hallett's first goal since being injured and missing several games was a huge boost in the 4th quarter as it tied the game 9-9 and allowed Exeter to relax a little and play better. As always, the defensive play of long poles Ryan Breen, Jeff Reppucci, and short stick defenders Mike Sotak, Tom Jardine, and Seungki Kim was crucial against the dangerous and talented KUA middies. This was Coach B's 299th career win at Exeter, and he cannot remember another game with such a wild swing in play from 1st half to 3rd quarter.
