Exeter 10   Holderness 2
Holderness, NH, Wednesday, May 20th - On a beautiful day in the NH lakes region, the Exeter lacrosse team played extremely well in all phases of the game to defeat a good Holderness team 10-2. It all starts with the faceoff and groundballs, and Mike Sotak was at his very best in teaming up with Eric Slingerland , Matt Hatch, and Jeff Reppucci to dominate possession of the ball. This ball control enabled Exeter to stay on offense a large portion of the first quarter and go out in front 4-0. The 2nd quarter was much more even with respect to time of possession, but the defense completely dominated the Holderness offense and either created turnovers or limited Holderness to shots that goalie Tyler Page easily controlled. Leading the defense was game ball winner Sam Gardner. Having Sam back in the lineup makes everyone else better in addition to his own ability to neutralize the other team's best offensive player. Sam, Matt Callahan, Alex Akoto, Matt Hatch, Jeff Reppucci, and the short stick defenders Tom Jardine and Mike Sotak were at their best against Holderness in both defending the goal as well as clearing the ball to the offensive zone. On offense, the team moved the ball well against a very athletic and aggressive Holderness defense that tried to pressure Exeter into mistakes. Leading the way with 4 goals was Patrick Johnson, while Charlie Gill (2g, 2a), Eric Slingerland (2g, 3a), and Max Cassidy (1g, 2 a) all had excellent afternoons. The halftime lead of 5-0 was increased to 6-0 before Holderness put one in about half way through the 3rd quarter. Exeter notched 2 more 3rd quarter goals to extend the lead to 8-1. The 4th quarter saw liberal substitution, but the reserves played hard and well to win the quarter 2-1. It was a very solid effort by all.
