Exeter,NH, Saturday, April 4th - Exeter played a very complete game in all phases as they defeated Cushing by a 12-4 margin. Once again it was faceoff man Mike Sotak and his wingman Eric Slingerland and Ryan Breen setting the tone with great faceoff control that allowed Exeter to dominate the ball for much of the game. Although Cushing scored first, Exeter would score the next five goals to take a nice 5-1 lead in the first quarter. This first quarter scoring was led by Eric with two, Patrick Johnson with two, and Gabo Borunda with a goal and an assist. These were the first points of Gabo's Exeter career. At the defensive end, Matt Callahan absolutely neutralized Cushing's big lefty attackman who had scored five goals in the previous game, and fellow long poles Alex Akoto and Jeff Reppucci repeatedly harassed their opposing attackmen into mistakes. Goalie Sean Fujimori was excellent in the goal and in making pinpoint clearing passes. Once again Cushing struck first in the 2nd quarter, but Charlie Gill and Patrick Johnson responded off of Slingerland assists to make the halftime score 7-2. While Exeter dominated the ball and shot opportunities in the 3rd quarter, Cushing goalie play and some poor shooting kept the Big red scoreless. Fortunately, the Exeter defense and short stick defenders Tom Jardine and Mike Sotak shut out Cushing as well. Co captain Max Cassidy scored early in the 4th on a beautiful high bouncer and then Tom Jardine, Walker Hallett, and Jason Brown all scored their first Exeter goals to put the game away. There were several gameball deserving performances, but the gameball goes to Mike Sotak for his great work on faceoffs and short stick defendng. Everyone played a lot in the 4th quarter as the starters rested, and the coaches were very encouraged by the quality of play. Exeter's dominance of the ground balls all game was another very positive sign.
