Exeter 9   Bridgton 6
Exeter, NH , Wednesday, April 8th -The Big Red lacrosse team played a very solid game of lacrosse against a much older and more experienced opponent in the all PG squad of Bridgton Academy and came away with a 9-6 victory. Bridgton was particularly talented at the defensive end with a few DI bound long poles who were big and athletic. However, young attackman Charlie Gill and co-game ball winner Patrick Johnson were far from intimidated and played like seasoned veterans with tremendous poise and hustle. Charlie scored one and assisted once, while Patrick had his second consecutive five-point game with two goals and three assists. Along with senior Cole Page, this attack did a great job of controlling the ball and making excellent decisions. Once again, Eric Slingerland led the way offensively with an outstanding performance on a 5 goal, 2 assist day. There is not much else to say other than Eric is playing at a different level than any other offensive player. At the defensive end, the other co-game ball winner Matt Callahan was the dominant force that stifled the Bridgton offense and limited them to just two goals until his departure in the 4th quarter. Ironically, one of those two goals came on a man-down situation when Matt was in the penalty box for a marginal call on a great hit. Matt not only neutralized Bridgton's best attackman, but he played great help defense, and also was key on a very successful clearing day. The other long poles Jeff Reppucci, Alex Akoto, and Ryan Breen teamed with short stick defenders Tom Jardine and Mike Sotak to play great defense in front of the superb play of goalies Tyler Page and Sean Fujimori. Exeter started fast by scoring the first four goals of the game and eventually taking a 7-2 halftime lead. Exeter continued to play well in the 3rd quarter as Mike Sotak continued his outstanding face-off work to allow Exeter to control the ball. With a 9-2 lead going into the 4th quarter, Exeter started playing all the reserves and understandably the momentum shifted somewhat. Nevertheless, the score was still a comfortable 9-3 with four minutes left in the game before Bridgton managed a few goals at the end to make the game appear closer than reality.
