Exeter 8   Tabor 6
Exeter, NH , Saturday, May 3rd - Exeter played 36 minutes of outstanding lacrosse that was sandwiched in between a poor first seven minutes of play and a last five minutes of play. Tabor came out strong and caught Exeter on their heels in the first seven minutes of the game. Three unassisted goals by Tabor off of dodges where Exeter's slides and team defense was lacking plus an extra man goal put Tabor ahead 4-0 just seven minutes into the game. After a needed Exeter timeout, the Big Red started playing the kind of lacrosse they have been playing all season. Ted McKenna and co-game ball award winner Charlie Brewer scored unassisted goals before the period ended and closed the gap to 4-2. Charlie was all over the field hustling on Exeter's effective ride, scooping up ground balls, and playing error free ball at the attack end of the field. He helped set the tone for the comeback. Exeter kept the pressure on as Eric Eberhart, Tom Clayton, Eddie Williams, Jef Reppucci, and co-game ball award winner Jon Stidd dominated faceoffs and controlled the action in the middle of the field. Jon Stidd appeared to be everywhere on the field. He played great short stick defense, was the go-to outlet pass on the clears, he led several fast breaks, made several big hits, and also played both short and long pole on a man-down defensive unit that was on the field way too much. Ted McKenna scored Exeter's 3rd goal off a Henry Lanier assist, and Eric Slingerland pumped in the tying goal at 4-4 with five minutes left in the half. Exeter's defense of Sam Gardner, Sam Johnson, Matt Callahan, and goalie Tyler Page shut down the Tabor offense completely and did a great job clearing against an aggressive 10-man Tabor ride. The offense kept applying pressure, but good goalie play and a couple of pipe shots kept the score at 4-4 at the half. Exeter played their best lacrosse in the third quarter and the first five minutes of the fourth. Nick Laster led the way with three goals during that stretch for his seventh hat trick of the season. Ted McKenna also completed his hat trick with another goal, and two of those four goals were assisted by Eric Slingerland. The defense pitched a shutout from the five minute mark of the 1st period to the five minute mark of the 4th period. With five minutes left in the game, Exeter was ahead 8-4 and in complete control. Unfortunately, Exeter played poorly in the final five minutes and did not finish strong. The offense threw the ball away a few times on silly passes, and this eventually led to a long string of poor penalties. Although a few were weak calls, Exeter managed to commit SEVEN 4th quarter penalties and completely take away their momentum. The man-down unit played great lacrosse and allowed just 2 goals during that stretch, both of them in 2-man down situations. It was a good win against a good opponent, but the team will need to become more consistent and eliminate the occasional lapses in judgment.
