Exeter 9   Portsmouth Abbey 3
Exeter, NH , Saturday, April 12th - After a sluggish first half very much due to the intense play of Portsmouth Abbey's defense and especially their goalkeeper, Exeter scored four unanswered 3rd quarter goals to take a 7-2 lead and complete command of the game. Exeter's own defense played extremely well and shut down Abbey completely from the 7 minute mark of the 2nd quarter until they scored again with 50 seconds left in the game. Goalie Nico von Stackelberg had an outstanding game in the nets, and long poles Sam Gardner, Matt Callahan, Sam Johnson, and Eddie Williams were excellent in all phases of the game. Exeter cleared the ball extremely well, but neither team managed much in the way of fast breaks on the other. One of the keys to the game was the incredible job of face-off man and co-game-ball winner Eric Eberhart. along with his wingman and the other game ball recipient Tom Clayton. Eric and Tom combined to win almost every faceoff in the game and allow Exeter to stay on offense and apply pressure to the Abbey defense. In addition, Tom played both offensive and defensive short stick, and was instrumental in the Exeter clear. Although the offense was not as sharp as they have been recently, it was still impressive that six different players scored and 7 of the 9 goals on the day were assisted. Outstanding on offense were Nick Laster with another hat trick, Henry Lanier with 2g and an assist, Max Cassidy and Ted McKenna each with a goal and 2 assists, and Matt Rawson and Eric Slingerland each scored once and assisted once. Henry Lanier made a key play in the game when he delivered a crushing body check that dislodged the ball from a clearing defenseman, and seconds later Eric Slingerland scored on a Rawson assist. The Big Red does not have much time to enjoy this difficult win as they host powerhouse Governor's Academy on Monday. Click here to see game pics
