Exeter 11 Pingree 5
S. Hamilton, MA, Wednesday, April 23rd -On an unseasonably warm and sunny day, the Exeter Big Red easily defeated a young but very talented Pingree team whose future looks extremely bright. On offense, this was the Ted McKenna (5g, 2a), Nick Laster (4g, 1a), and Matt Rawson (2g, 2a) show. One of these three scored all of Exeter's goals with Nick and Ted each tallying three of Exeter's first six goals. The defense was led by the usual group of Eddie Williams, Sam Gardner, Sam Johnson, and especially game-ball winner Matt Callahan. Matt completely dominated his attackman by not only not allowing him a quality look at the goal, but usually taking the ball away and leading the clear. Matt continues to work incredibly well in the d-unit with Sam Gardner and Sam Johnson, and this group will surely be greatly tested when they meet West DI opponent Loomis this weekend with their great attackmen. Eric Eberhart once again dominated faceoffs with the help of wingmen Tom Clayton, Jon Stidd, and long-pole Eddie Williams. Although a few easy scoring opportunities were missed early, Exeter built a 6-0 halftime lead After Matt Rawson scored the first goal of the 2nd half, Exeter gave up their first goal of the game on a transition situation that resulted in a 1 v 1 on goalie Tyler Page. Exeter answered this goal just 12 seconds later with a Rawson to McKenna connection off of a fast break, and then kept the pressure on until the score reached 11-1 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Exeter's 2nd team played the entire 4th quarter and struggled against Pingree's first team. Exeter's inability to pick up ground balls and clear into their offensive zone allowed Pingree repeated good offensive opportunities. Despite many good saves by back-up goalie Sean Fujimori, Pingree managed four 4th quarter goals by battling hard to the very end. The lone offensive highlight of the 4th quarter was a Cole Page dodge that resulted in a left-handed shot off the pipe in traffic despite the sliding defense. Exeter played well, but will definitely need to step it up another notch for this weekend.
