Exeter 10   Nobles 9
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, April 2nd - This was a game for the ages, as it took SIX sudden-death overtime periods before middie Jon Stidd scored the winning goal unassisted on a low hard shot from a dead run. Needless to say this was a close tough match between two very good and very evenly matched teams. Nobles started out the game with high intensity all over the field, outplayed Exeter in all phases of the game, and jumped out to a 4-1 lead after only 7 minutes of play in the first quarter. Given that Exeter had a 3-minute illegal stick penalty that resulted in only one Noble score, the Big Red was lucky to be that close. Exeter seemed to be jump-started by the success of the man-down unit and the intensity and quality of play overall improved dramatically. Ted McKenna converted a Matt Rawson feed to make it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, and then unassisted goals by Rawson and defenseman Sam Johnson turned out to be the only scoring for either team in the 2nd quarter. Exeter's defense led by game ball winning goalkeeper Tyler Page shut out Nobles in the 2nd period. Long poles Sam Gardner, Matt Callahan, Sam Johnson, and Eddie Williams played extremely well against a talented Nobles offense. Henry Lanier, Matt Rawson, and Nick Laster each scored in the 3rd period to give Exeter a slight 7-6 lead at the three quarter mark, but it would not last for long. Exeter started to commit silly penalties in the 4th quarter that helped Nobles to score three 4th quarter goals. Fortunately, Exeter was able to score two goals as Brent Mayo soloed from behind, and Nick Laster completed his hat trick with a great dodge and shot from in front. Each of the overtime periods featured excellent opportunities for each team to win the game. Tyler Page raised the level of his already excellent play another notch and just became unbelievable in the net. He also did a great job running the clear and hitting the open man after a save. It was a perfect pass from Tyler to a streaking Jon Stidd that led to the sprint across the midfield line and to Jon's dodge for the winning shot.
