Exeter 12 NMH 7
Northfield, MA , Saturday, May 10th - After a slow first quarter in which Exeter was still recovering from the 2+ hour bus ride and limited by some very good NMH goalie play, the Big Red started to click on all cylinders and play to up to their potential the rest of the game. Leading the way offensively were Nick Laster (5 goals), Matt Rawson (2 g, 3 a), and game ball winner Max Cassidy with a career game of 3 goals and 1 assist. When NMH scored first in the 3rd quarter to narrow Exeter’s lead to 5-4, Max scored or assisted on three of Exeter’s next four unanswered goals as Exeter pushed ahead for good to 9-4. When Nick Laster scored the next two goals of the game to give Exeter an 11-4 fourth quarter lead with eight minutes to play, the game was essentially over. To NMH’s credit, they never stopped hustling and playing hard and scored three more times against Exeter’s one last score to make it a 12-7 final outcome. It looked like another defensive battle early as both teams struggled to score against stingy defenses and some high quality goalie play. A couple of unsettled lapses by Exeter let NMH score three first half goals, but the defensive squad of Sam Gardner, Sam Johnson, Matt Callahan, Eddie Williams, Tom Clayton, Jon Stidd, and goalie Tyler Page bottled up the NMH offense repeatedly and caused many turnovers. After a shaky 1st quarter, the offense really clicked in both the settled and unsettled game. In addition to the scoring of Laster, Cassidy, and Rawson, Ted McKenna changed his usual role from goal-scorer to goal-helper as he registered three beautiful assists on the day. Exeter’s overall hustle and competitiveness at all phases of the game was nice to see after the previous Wednesday’s sleepy performance. As usual, Eric Eberhart and his wingmen did a great job on the faceoffs. Hopefully, this performance will carry over for the last two weeks of the season.
