Providence, RI , Saturday, April 19th - Despite a slow start offensively, Exeter dominated play throughout the game on this beautiful and warm April afternoon, and cruised to a 9-1 victory over host Moses Brown. To their credit, Mo Brown played very hard and physical lacrosse on their new home turf and managed to hold Exeter to just a single goal in the first quarter. However, Exeter’s defense and goalie play by Tyler Page completely shut down the Mo Brown offense and kept relentless pressure on the ball during their possessions. Game ball winner Sam Gardner was not only a key part of the stifling defensive effort, but he gobbled up loose balls, was instrumental on the clear, and scored a momentum sustaining goal in the 2nd quarter with long-stick face-dodge to his left hand followed by a bounce shot into the upper corner. Sam’s goal was in the middle of a 2nd quarter surge that produced five unanswered goals to give Exeter a 6-0-halftime lead. With the temperature in the 70’s and the on-field turf temperature above 80, the players for both teams got tired and played some sloppy ball in the 3rd quarter. This led to five 3rd quarter penalties for Exeter and three for Mo Brown. It was during one of these man-down situations for Exeter that Mo Brown scored their only goal of the game. Substitutions for Exeter started in the 3rd quarter, and the 2nd team played quite well for the entirety of the 4th quarter. Standing out on defense and face-off play were face-off man Eric Eberhart and short poles Tom Clayton and Jon Stidd. Long poles Eddie Williams, Sam Johnson, and Matt Callahan joined Sam Gardner to once again demonstrate why they are among the elite defensive units in prep school lax. The offense was led by Nick Laster (3 g), Charlie Brewer (2 g, 1 a), and Matt Rawson (1g, 2 a), while noting that rookie Greg Jenkins earned his first career point with a very nice assist to Nick Laster on Exeter’s eight goal.
