Exeter 7   Loomis 4
Windsor, CT , Saturday, April 26th - WOW, what a game. This was a real battle between two good teams on a beautiful April day. Every ground ball was a war, and whatever player came up with it continued to be pressured. Both teams played very effective defense the entire game as it seesawed back and forth with lots of action. With the score tied 4-4 and a little more than two minutes left to play, Eric Slingerland passed to a cutting Ted McKenna who managed an aerial circus 360 degree spin move and shot all in one motion to put Exeter ahead 5-4. Eric Eberhart won the ensuing faceoff, his 10th win of the day, and got the ball to the offensive end where Exeter attempted to run out the clock against a scrambling Loomis defense. Co-game ball winner Brent Mayo beat his man and came around from behind to score his second goal of the game and essentially seal the win. The defense and goalie Tyler Page played magnificently all day and made the very potent Loomis attack work hard for every shot opportunity. Sam Johnson, Sam Gardner, Matt Callahan, and co-game ball winner Eddie Williams more than met the challenge presented by a Loomis team that was well coached, moved the ball extremely well, and was coming off a very good performance against Deerfield. Eddie not only shut out their best midfielder, but he was in on most faceoffs as a wingman, and he was excellent on ground balls and clearing. The defensive long poles and short stick defenders Tom Clayton and Jon Stidd timed their slides perfectly and most importantly, made 2nd and 3rd slides as Loomis did a good job of moving the ball all day. When Loomis did get free for a shot, goalie Tyler Page was there for the save. Tyler also did a great job finding the open man and leading the clear. The Exeter offense was led by Brent and Ted with two goals apiece, while Eric Slingerland, Nick Laster, and Charlie Brewer scored one apiece. Matt Rawson contributed two important assists. This was a defensive day for the most part, and the Big Red fortunately prevailed in a game that could have gone either way. The team wants to thank all the parents for their attendance and wonderful support, especially the delicious tailgate after the game. It should also be acknowledged with amazement and admiration that opposing head coach Jim Wilson, a septuagenarian who was appointed to the Loomis faculty in 1959 and who has been the only head coach in Loomis lacrosse history, is currently in his 49th year coaching.
