Exeter 10 Holderness 5
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, May 21st - Exeter played one of their best and most consistent games of the season against a very good and very competitive Holderness team. It all started with faceoff man Eric Eberhart and his legion of wingmen Tom Clayton, Charlie Brewer, Jon Stidd, Eddie Williams, and Jeff Reppucci. Exeter dominated the ball and the offense ran as smoothly as it has all season. Newly named All-American middie Nick Laster opened the scoring on a nice dodge and shot, and Matt Rawson contributed two more 1st quarter goals to give the Big Red a 3-0 first quarter lead. Goals by Max Cassidy from Eric Slingerland and Ted McKenna assisted by Nick Laster made it a 5-0 game before Holderness scored two in quick succession with two minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Brent Mayo scored unassisted as the 2nd quarter ended to push the lead back to 6-2. The defense was dominant and led by All-American Sam Gardner and game ball winner Sam Johnson. Quiet Sam has been a huge factor in Exeter's defensive success all season, and he finally gets some of the credit he deserves with this game ball award. The "Sams" along with Matt Callahan just smothered the Holderness attack and gave them few opportunities and looks at the goal. As they have all season, they worked well together on defensive slides as well as on clears. With goalie Tyler Page making saves when necessary and directing the clear, the defense was outstanding at turning the ball over and bringing it down to the attack. The 3rd quarter was one of the best for Exeter this season. They took Holderness out of the game with five unanswered 4th quarter goals that ran the lead to 10-2. Great play by defensive middies Jon Stidd, Charlie Brewer, and newly named Academic All-American Tom Clayton kept the pressure on Holderness the entire quarter. Exeter started to control the clock in the 4th quarter, but to Holderness' credit, they were not going to lie down. They started to press all over the field and force some mistakes from some of the Exeter subs not accustomed to the pace and pressure. Although Holderness finished strong with three unanswered goals to make the game a 10-5 final, Exeter's coaches could not have been more pleased overall. Offensive stars for the game include Max Cassidy with a great 3 goal, 1 assist effort, Matt Rawson with 2 goals and 2 assists, and Nick Laster with 2 goals and 1 assist. One BIG one left to go.
