Exeter 8   Brewster 7   (2 OT)
Exeter, NH , Wednesday, April 30th -With less than two minutes in the game, Brewster's ball in their own offensive zone, and Exeter down by 2 goals, it did not look good for the Big Red. It all started with the defense causing a turnover and moving the ball up field into the offensive end. A loose ball ensued near the midfield line, and co-game ball winner Ted McKenna came out of the pile, raced to the goal, and pumped in his 5th consecutive goal of the game to bring Exeter to within one with 1:18 seconds left on the clock. Eric Eberhart and wingmen Eddie Williams and Jon Stidd continued their great work on the faceoff and got the ball back for Exeter. Brewster committed a holding penalty at the 0.59 mark, but Exeter's man-up offense was unable to score during the 30 second man advantage. With the sides back to all even strength and only 10 seconds remaining, co-game ball winner Nick Laster drove to the goal, drew a double team, and passed to Matt Rawson up top about 15 yards in front of the goal. Matt's bullet of a shot bounced in the upper corner with exactly 4 seconds on the clock to tie the game. After a first overtime period that was dominated by the defenses, Exeter gained control to open up the 2nd overtime. Exeter really applied offensive pressure with repeated dodges and quality shots, but could not find the net. Finally, Nick Laster attacked the right side, came all the way around the goal to the other side, and scored on a great shot into the corner. It was a great win after squandering a 4th quarter 5-3 lead by allowing Brewster transition opportunities that resulted in four unanswered goals and the 7-5 deficit to overcome. Brewster is an explosive team that Exeter's defense managed to hold to just 3 goals for the first 40 minutes of the game. Led by Sam Gardner and Matt Callahan, Exeter's poles not only played great defense, but were featured in the clearing of the ball to the offensive zone. Although the offense was struggling most of the day, when Ted McKenna scored his 4th quarter goal off a Rawson assist to give Exeter a 5-3 lead, it looked like momentum was in Big Red's favor. Offensive errors and some poor decisions on clears let the Brewster transition game come to life and snatch the lead back. The team showed a lot of character to make this kind of comeback, but there is plenty to work on to keep getting better.
