Exeter 13   Avon 9
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, April 9th - An explosive 2nd quarter that resulted in six Exeter goals to just one by Avon broke open a 3-3 tie game and gave Exeter a 9-4 halftime lead that was never relinquished. Leading the way was game ball winner Eric Slingerland with a career high 6 goals and 1 assist. All but one of Eric’s goals was assisted, a good indicator as to how well Eric moved without the ball, and how well the offense was moving the ball and finding the open man. Nick Laster continues to give opponent defenses real matchup problems as his four-goal output marked his 3rd consecutive game with 3 or more scores. His rip into the corner at the last second of the first half was a huge half-time momentum builder. Henry Lanier also had a big offensive day with a goal and three beautiful assists, while Matt Rawson (1g,1a) and Ted McKenna (1g,1a) completed the 13 goal output by the offense. Although it was Slingerland and the offense that stole the show, the excellent play of the defense cannot be overlooked. The always-talented Avon team came as advertised. They have a very experienced (20 seniors), very athletic, and explosive team that plays in the talent laden Western New England DI Founders League. They have a number of players who are heading to top DI lax programs next year, and the defense knew they had their hands full when Avon scored the first goal of the game only 14 seconds into the 1st quarter. Led by Sam Gardner who was matched up on Avon’s star attackman Alex Demopoulos, the Big Red defense held Avon to just 3 more goals over the next 28 minutes of play. Matt Callahan, Sam Johnson, Eddie Williams, and midfield defenders Tom Clayton, Charlie Brewer, and Jon Stidd all played superbly. Goalie Tyler Page had another outstanding day with 11 saves and leading the clear. While the 2nd half was not played at quite the same high level as the first, Exeter never let Avon get closer than a 3-goal margin. Avon picked up their play and intensity to keep the game close, but Exeter always had an answer when Avon seemed to gain momentum. It was a very solid win this early in the season.
