Exeter 7 Andover 10
Andover, MA , Friday, May 23rd - In a very intense and physical game in front of an enthusiastic crowd, an underdog Andover team prevailed over the favored Exeter squad. Season records and comparable scores always need to be ignored when Exeter and Andover get together, and this year was certainly a perfect illustration of that. Exeter had trouble matching Andover's intensity at the beginning of the game and fell behind 2-0 before Ted McKenna converted a Matt Rawson feed with less than three minutes left in the first quarter. It was the McKenna and Rawson show offensively in the first three quarters of the game for Exeter as each scored twice and assisted each other's scores. Andover completely shut down the Exeter midfield scoring until the 4th quarter when Eric Slingerland, Jon Stidd, and Nick Laster each scored once during the 4th quarter comeback. Meanwhile, Exeter's attempt at matching Andover's intensity resulted in some silly penalties as well as a couple of questionable calls. Nevertheless, Exeter committed 8 penalties total with 6 of them coming in the 2nd half. Twice Exeter found itself down two men, and both resulted in important Andover goals. When Nick Laster scored Exeter's 7th goal with 3:40 remaining in the game, the score was 9-7 and momentum seemed to finally turn Exeter's way. Exeter gained subsequent possession and hit the pipe twice in an attempt to trim the lead to one. Exeter dominated possession during the last few minutes and had a man-up opportunity with 40 seconds to go. Another pipe shot and the ensuing scramble eventually led to Andover scoring their 10th goal with just 18 seconds on the clock. While it was certainly a very disappointing loss, the team should be proud of their comeback from a 9-4 deficit, and of course their excellent 13-4 season.
