Exeter, NH, Saturday, April 14th - Led by co-game ball winners Freddy Janney and Tom Clayton, the BIG RED erupted for eight 2nd period goals to take a 11-1 halftime lead and essentially put the game out of reach. Exeter dominated play in the first quarter as well, but had trouble converting their shot opportunities into goals. Once Exeter's shooters found their range, Portsmouth Abbey was in trouble. Freddy scored 4 goals, 2 assists, Max Alderman recorded 3 goals and 4 assists, Nic Laster registered 5 goals, and Tom Clayton and Eric Slingerland each chipped in two goals and an assist. The starting defense of Garrett Nicholson, John Dwyer, Sam Gardner, and Evan O'Brien allowed only a few shots on goal with just one slipping by goalie Yuri Larrabee. The middies and attackmen did a great job of riding, causing turnovers, and creating transition opportunities. Eric Slingerland took the lion's share of faceoffs, with Sam Gardner also taking a bunch. They both did great job helping Exeter dominate possession of the ball all game long. The 3rd quarter brought mass substitutions and it took the 2nd string guys several minutes to get adjusted to the pace and intensity of the game. After yielding four goals in a stretch of uncharacteristic sloppy play, the boys snapped out of their slump and started to play good lacrosse again. For the last few minutes of the 3rd period and all of the 4th quarter, goalie Tyler Page and the defense of Eddie Williams, Jared Dick, and Max Morse shutdown the Portsmouth Abbey offense completely. Anytime you can win big on the road after a 2.5 hour bus ride, it is a good day. The tailgate afterwards was fantastic, so special thanks to Tracy Gardner and Karl Reinhold for organizing, and to the large group of parents who brought food and cheered our victory.
