Exeter 5 Loomis Chaffee 1
Exeter, NH, Saturday, April 28th
- This was a great effort by the entire team against a very high quality opponent.
Loomis came into this game with an impressive 6-1 record in the challenging
DI division of Western New England, and had a high powered offense averaging
over 11 goals a game. Only Deerfield had defeated Loomis this year, and Exeter
had lost to Loomis four consecutive years in tough and close competitions.
This year, it was all about a defense that played great individually and even
better as a unit. Long sticks John Dwyer, Garrett Nicholson, Sam Gardner,
Evan O'Brien, and Eddie Williams were tenacious,
tough, and unrelenting. Yuri Larrabee was superb in the goal,
and short stick defenders Tom Clayton and Charlie
Brewer executed the game plan to perfection. The entire unit deserves
high praise for their defense, but also for their superb clearing of the ball.
There were virtually no bad decisions or passes on clears, and this had a
profound effect on ball possession and the overall flow of the game. While
it is difficult to single out anyone from this unit, the game
balls are being awarded to Garrett
Nicholson and John
Dwyer who also managed to each score a crucial goal. Garrett's
goal came when Exeter was down 1-0 in the first quarter and was looking for
any kind of an offensive lift. John's goal came as the horn was about to sound
to end the 3rd quarter to give Exeter a little breathing room and a 3-1 lead.
While this was clearly not a big offensive day for the attack and offensive
middies, they played extremely well against an impressive defense. They generated
many quality shots, but most importantly possessed the ball and did not make
silly turnovers. Instead, Nic Laster, Max Alderman, and Freddy
Janney did what every good attack unit does whether scoring or not.
They rode extremely well, they took care of the ball, and they fought hard
for loose balls to maintain possession. The first midfield unit of Chris
Silberman, George Negroponte, and Eric Slingerland
played great lacrosse. Each of these three scored crucial goals,
and Chris and George assisted each others
goals in the process. Just as importantly, they helped Exeter win the ground
ball game, they played excellent defense themselves, and they prevented the
vaunted Loomis fast break from gaining traction. Everything starts with the
faceoff, and Loomis came into the game with one of the most dominating faceoff
men and units in prep school lacrosse. Eric Eberhart was
outstanding in neutralizing or winning the initial clamp, and then wingmen
Garrett Nicholson and Evan O'Brien joined
with Eric to win the faceoff battle 6 to 3. As the coaches
told the team after the game, it was one of the best overall performances
to take place on the stadium field in a very long time. click here to see
