Exeter 8 Kennebunk 1
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, April 4th
- The snow and sleet started coming down around 3:30 PM, so by the start of
the 4:30 PM game there was a layer of snow on the turf and orange balls were
a must. Nevertheless, Exeter and Kennebunk were not to be denied their annual
rite of playing our first game against each other in horrific conditions.
Amazingly, the quality of play was reasonably good. Despite every ground ball
resulting in a pocket full of snow in addition to the lacrosse ball, the players
from both teams competed hard and well. It took awhile for the offense to
get going as Exeter was only able to muster goals by Nic Laster and
Freddy Janney in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. The defense
of John Dwyer, Garrett Nicholson, Sam Gardner, Evan
O'Brien, and goalie Yuri Larrabee dominated play
at their end, and did not let Kennebunk hold onto the ball for very long.
The 2nd quarter was all about game
ball winner Max Alderman taking over the game. He scored the
opening goal of the period on an assist from Laster, and
then he proceeded to find the open man and assist on three of Exeter's next
five goals. Scoring for Exeter in the 2nd quarter to blow the game open was
Eric Slingerland, JP Collmus, George Negroponte, Charlie Brewer,
and Nic Laster. With the score 8-1 and Exeter dominating
play, Exeter emptied the bench and let the starters sit out the 2nd half.
While the field and weather conditions continued to deteriorate, the play
on the field by Exeter's 2nd team stayed focus and intense. There were several
good opportunities to increase the lead that were denied, and goalie Tyler
Page made a few outstanding saves to keep his 2nd half shutout.
