Exeter 8 Holderness 7 OT
Plymouth, NH, Wednesday, May 23rd
- When Holderness scored the go ahead goal with 7.5 seconds remaining
in regulation it certainly seemed Exeter was destined to suffer their fourth
1-goal loss of this season. An infraction by Holderness on the ensuing face-off
gave Exeter the ball at midfield with just 5 seconds on the clock. Co-game-ball
winner George Negroponte started with the ball and found attackman
Nick Laster inside the restraining line. Nic caught the ball,
rolled quickly to his left and fired a bouncer in the top corner of the net
as time expired in regulation. Holderness had the first offensive opportunity
in the overtime, but Exeter's defense held firm. When Exeter cleared the ball
into the offensive zone, middie Charlie Brewer beat his man
outside the restraining box, drew a slide, and found Nic Laster
with the pass. This time Nic wheeled to his right and scored
the game winner with a right handed bounce shot from about 12 yards out. For
his late game heroics, Nic shares
the game ball with George. This game was close
and hard fought from the beginning as Exeter was adjusting to missing four
starters out of the game due to injuries. The replacements played excellent
lacrosse against a physical and inspired Holderness team trying to win their
last game of the season on their own turf. Playing significant roles were
attackmen Max Cassidy, Owen McAleer, and LSM Eddie
Williams. Yuri Larrabee made 11 saves, some of them
from close range, and defenseman Garrett Nicholson played
an inspirational game while not at 100% physically. In addition to Nic Laster,
the offensive production came from Max Alderman (2 goals
and an assist), JP Collmus (2 goals), and George
Negroponte (1 goal and the big assist). It was a nice win that helps
balance out the three one-goal losses Exeter has suffered this season.
