Exeter 6 Governor's Academy 5
Exeter, NH, Monday, May, 7th
- With 17 seconds remaining in a 5-5 contest, Freddy Janney
fired a shot into the upper right corner of the goal off an assist from co-game
ball winner Max Alderman to give Exeter a 6-5 comeback win over
the #1 ranked and undefeated Governor’s Academy. GA came into the game
with an 11-0 record, averaging 14 goals per game, yielding less than 4 goals
per game, holding the #1 rank in Eastern New England, and being the 2nd ranked
prep school in all of New England behind Deerfield. The Governors certainly
looked as good as advertised as they scored twice in the first quarter and
twice again in the 2nd quarter to take a 4-0 halftime lead. Despite generating
several quality shots, Exeter’s offense was struggling against a very
good GA defense, and simply not playing inspired lacrosse. All that changed
when Exeter came out in the 2nd half with a different attitude, a more aggressive
approach, and started to control the game. Much of the credit goes to co-game
ball winner Eric Eberhart’s domination of faceoffs. He
either controlled the ball to himself, or managed to get it out to his excellent
wingmen Evan O’Brien and Garrett Nicholson.
Max Alderman scored off a nice assist from JP Collmus
half way through the 3rd quarter, to finally put Exeter on the board and to
make it a 4-1 game. A few minutes later, a broken clear by Exeter resulted
in a breakaway goal by a GA attackman, and the differential was back to four
goals. This would be GA’s last goal of the game. With less than a minute
remainng in the 3rd quarter, Nic Laster scored the first
of his two goals off an Alderman assist, and the 3rd period
ended 5-2. The 4th quarter would be Exeter’s. With Evan O’Brien,
Garrett Nicholson, John Dwyer, Sam Gardner, Tom Clayton, Charlie Brewer,
and goalie Yuri Larrabee shutting down the GA offense and
creating turnovers, Exeter started controlling the action. Exeter’s
Laster scored four minutes into the 4th off a beautiful assist from Alex
Katz, and now things were getting interesting. Eric Eberhart
continued to win the ball back so Exeter stayed on offense, and two minutes
later, Freddy Janney scored Exeter’s 4th goal off yet
another Alderman assist. GA was trying to win back momentum
by playing more aggressively, but in doing so, they committed four 4th quarter
penalties; including a locked-in unsportsmanlike. Exeter capitalized yet again
when Max Alderman scored his 2nd goal after a nice pass from
Nic Laster, and now the game was tied with five minutes remaining.
The ball went up and down the field several times as the defenses tightened
and turned away the offenses. With 40 seconds left in the game, another GA
penalty was called, and the Janney from Alderman
winning shot came just 23 seconds later. This was an outstanding win over
an excellent team. To come back and win the 2nd half 6-1 is an amazing accomplishment,
and a real testament to the grit and determination of the BIG
RED. Congratulations.
