Exeter 2  Deerfield 12
Deerfield, MA, Saturday, Mat, 19th - Exeter never got off the bus and competed in this game against an excellent, deep, and athletic Deerfield squad. Deerfield controlled the ball and the pace of the game from the opening face-off and continued to put tremendous pressure on the Exeter defense. Uncharacteristically, Exeter started committing penalties in the first quarter, and the trend continued throughout the game. Some of the calls were questionable, but most of the penalty time was deserved as Exeter players stopped moving their feet and started swinging their sticks instead. At one point, Exeter was down 3 men and was playing with 3 defenders against 6 attackers. Amazingly, Exeter managed to dodge that bullet and hold Deerfield scoreless in that one minute span. That was probably the last highlight for the big red. Although the score after the first quarter was a respectable 2-0, the defense was on their heels the entire time, goalie Yuri Larrabee was heroic in the goal, and the offense had not managed to control the ball for more than a minute. Despite a great effort by the defense, they simply wore down against the unrelenting Deerfield attack. Four more goals in the 2nd quarter made the halftime 6-0. The 3rd quarter was the worst, as the officials now seemed to pile it on. Exeter was called for eight 3rd quarter penalties, one of which was a 3-minute non-releasable. A few times, Exeter was playing two men down. Playing man-down the entire quarter against a great team is not the way to make a come back. By the quarter's end the score was 10-0 and both coaches emptied their benches. Exeter played decently in the 4th quarter, but way too little too late. click here to see pics
