Exeter 3 Bridgton 4
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, March 28th
- For the first scrimmage of the season against a very good opponent, this
was a very positive outing for the BIG RED. As suspected, the Exeter defense
is very strong, and Yuri Larrabee was magnificent in the
goal. Exeter could not maintain control of the ball in our own offensive zone
for much of the first half. Bridgton used their athleticism and depth to keep
constant pressure on the ball all over the field. Despite having the ball
90% of the time, Bridgton could only manage 1 goal in the first quarter to
match the 1 goal Exeter managed on a deflection by JP Collmus
of a George Negroponte pass. Exeter settled down in the 2nd
quarter and started to control the ball much more and to generate shots on
the goal. Nic Laster scored on an assist by Chris
Silberman to put Exeter ahead 2-1 at the half. Long poles Garrett
Nicholson, John Dwyer, Sam Gardner, and Evan O'Brien played superb
defensively the entire game, as three of Bridgton's four goals were scored
by middies. Bridgton tied it up 2-2 in the 3rd quarter, and the fourth went
scoreless until prep Eric Slingerland scored unassisted with
9 minutes left to play. Bridgton tied the score with 3 minutes on the clock,
but Exeter had a clean fast break to seal the win with 30 seconds to play.
Unfortunately, the offense could not convert the fast break, turned the ball
over, and Bridgton scored with 18 seconds left on the clock. All in all, this
was a very good outing for Exeter. Once the offense clicks into gear, things
will look even better. click
