Exeter 4  Avon Old Farms 5
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, April 11th - For the first three quarters of this contest, Exeter played almost perfect defense and manage to hold the Avon offense to a single goal. With a 3-1 lead starting the 4th quarter, Exeter suffered a terrible two minute stretch in which we could not get a faceoff, and then made a few key defensive mistakes. Avon took advantage of this momentum swing to score four unanswered goals during those two minutes. All of a sudden a 2-goal advantage was turned into a 2-goal deficit. To Exeter's credit, they kept their composure and started playing excellent lacrosse again for the last 9 minutes of the game. At the five minute mark, Max Alderman scored on an assist from Tom Clayton, and now the score was 5-4. Exeter ratcheted up the pressure and controlled the ball for most of the last five minutes while working hard to score the tying goal. With less than two minutes to play, Exeter drew a penalty on Avon and had a man advantage for one minute. During the man-up situation, Exeter ran two plays to perfection, generated two great shots, and the Avon goalie made terrific saves on both shots to seal the 5-4 win for the Winged Beavers from Avon.
Not enough can be said about goalie Yuri Larrabee and the defense of Evan O'Brien, Garrett Nicholson, Sam Gardner, and John Dwyer. They simply shut down the Avon offense for most of the game, and there are some excellent offensive players on the Avon team. Several times Yuri needed to come up with a big save in close, and he was up to the task each time. Avon moved personnel around to try and find better match-ups on short stick defenders, but Charlie Brewer, Tom Clayton, and all the short stick middies did a great job defensively against some tough opponents. Exeter notched the first goal midway through the first quarter of the game on a nice back door feed from JP Collmus to Freddy Janney, and then Freddy went in unassisted midway through the 2nd quarter to give Exeter a 2-0 lead. It was not until one minute left in the first half did the defense yield a goal, so Exeter was up 2-1 in this defensive contest. Eric Slingerland put Exeter ahead 3-1 on a short-handed goal assisted by Evan O'Brien, and that is how the 3rd quarter ended. This was a tough loss to a good club, but it also should give the Exeter team confidence in knowing they can play with top level competition. click here to see pics.
