Exeter 5  Andover 6
Exeter, NH, Saturday, May, 26h - It is only fitting that this season ends with a close, hard-fought, low-scoring, one-goal game, that goes down to the last seconds. Unfortunately for Exeter, we suffered our 4th one-goal loss of the season by the score of 6-5. Exeter came out strong and dominated the ball for most of the first quarter with excellent ground ball work, good riding, a patient offense, and of course excellent defense. Despite having the ball most of the time, we were only able to manage one George Negroponte goal off a JP Collmus assist. Scoring goals was a challenge for this team all year long, and today was no different when facing a very good Andover defense and an excellent goalkeeper. Andover also got on the board for one first quarter goal to tie the game 1-1. Also typical of Exeter's play this season has been relatively short periods during a game when the team just plays poorly. In this game, that poor play occurred in the 2nd quarter when Andover tool control of the game and outscored Exeter 4-1 to take a 5-2 halftime lead. When Andover scored their 6th goal just two minutes into the 3rd quarter to take a 6-2 lead, it did not look good for the home team. Once again, Exeter showed grit and determination and was not going down without a fight. Led by a swarming defense, excellent 2nd half goalie play by Yuri Larrabee, and the offensive heroics of Max Alderman, Exeter started to chip away at the Andover lead. With five minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter, Max made it 6-3 off a nice fast break feed from Charlie Brewer. Three minutes later Max scored unassisted to make it a 6-4 game going into the 4th quarter. At the 8 minute mark of the 4th quarter, Max scored off an Alex Katz assist to bring Exeter within one. The last eight minutes were back and forth as both teams fought the unusually high temperatures and left everything on the field. A shot off the pipe as well as some other excellent scoring opportunities just did not fall Exeter's way. Andover was struggling to hold onto the ball against a swarming Exeter defense, but Exeter's offense just could not convert and tie the game. Great defensive effort by Garrett Nicholson, John Dwyer, Sam Gardner, and Evan O'Brien should be noted. It was a very exciting game for all the fans, and too bad that either team had to lose. click here to see pics
