Exeter 4  Loomis Chaffee 6
Loomis - Saturday, April 29th - It was a beautiful day for a lacrosse game, and two of the top teams in New England did not disappoint the many fans at the game. This was a hard fought physical battle from the very beginning, with the defenses for both teams dominating the action. Loomis Chaffee was the top ranked prep school in all of New England after their 11-10 defeat of Deerfield last week, and Exeter managed to hold them to their lowest goal output of the season in this 6-4 loss. Amazingly, this was despite being penalized 10 times for time-serving infractions, several of them questionable calls. The defense led by Brett Hughes, Colin Murphy, Andrew Farrissey, Evan Crosby, Kevin Crane, and short sticks Wes Chaput, Michael Kelly, and Stephen Moulton played heroically in front of ggoal keeper Alec Shand. Exeter spotted Loomis the first two goals on mistakes. The first came on a man-down situation in which the defense did not recognize the formation and Loomis scored 5 seconds into the penalty on one pass to an open man near the goal. The 2nd goal came on a clearing pass that should not have been made and was intercepted for a resulting one-on-on goal against Shand. Exeter rebounded from these two mistakes and scored two of their own to knot the score 2-2 after 1 quarter of play. Sam Duprey scored on a Michael Scalise assist, and Michael Kelly made a nice backdoor move and was assisted by Colin Murphy. Loomis scored once in the 2nd to take a 3-2 halftime lead, and then extended that to 5-2 with two unanswered 3rd quarter goals. Exeter's offense struggled due to some poor shooting and good Loomis defense. When Loomis went ahead 6-2 on their 2nd man-up goal of the game, it did not look good. Exeter never quit and came back with two 4th quarter goals by Duprey and Scalise. However, it was too little too late, and the upset was not to be. It was a very good effort against an excellent team on the road. This is an extremely tough week ahead with the top rated team in Eastern New England on tap for Monday, the all PG lax powerhouse Navy Prep on Wednesday, and then the big rival Tabor who is having a great year on Saturday.
