Exeter 6 Tabor 3
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, May 18th
- For the 8th consecutive year, Exeter defeated Tabor in their typical tough
and competitive game. This was a game between two very good and very athletic
teams, and the quality of play did not disappoint the fans. Defenses dominated
the game as both offenses could not find consistent openings to create easy
shots. Exeter's defense led by co-game
ball winner Evan Crosby held Tabor to their lowest output of
the season. Evan played long stick middie most of the game, played wing on
face-offs, and was great on ground balls and getting back to prevent Tabor's
transition game from being a factor. Long poles Brett Hughes, Colin
Murphy, Andrew Farrissey, and Kevin Crane, played
great position on the talented Tabor attack and completely shut down the inside.
Short stick defenders Bruce Hallett, Wes Chaput, Chris and
Nick Downer did not yield anything although attacked frequently.
This group also did a great job on faceoffs, groundballs, and clearing. Also
of note was the fine faceoff work of Eric Eberhart and Evan
Rose. Exeter scored 4 minutes into the game on a pretty assist from
Michael Scalise to the other
game ball winner Chris Duffy, and then Michael
found Scott MacKenzie on a man-up play to make it 2-0 at
the end of the first quarter. At the 6-minute mark of the 2nd period, Tabor
made it 2-1 on a tough outside shot with two defenders on the ball, but Chris
Duffy responded almost immediately with an unassisted goal on a determined
dodge from behind. In addition to his 2 goal, 1 assist output, Chris
was a great settling influence on the offense and made good decisions with
the ball all game. With a 3-1 lead and possession of the ball with less than
20 seconds to go in the half, it seemed certain Exeter would at least have
a 2-goal lead at the half. However, Exeter made a mental error and turned
it over with enough time left for Tabor to score their 2nd goal on a loose
ball scramble just outside of the crease area with 1 second on the clock.
Whatever momentum that last second goal gave Tabor was quickly erased as Chris
Duffy made a perfect pass to a cutting Sam Duprey
to give Exeter a 4-2 lead. A few minutes later, Scott MacKenzie made
it 5-2 on a solo dodge. Tabor closed within two again in what was to be their
last goal of the game at the 3-minute mark of the 3rd quarter. However, Stephen
Moulton dodged and scored from up top on Exeter's next possession
to make it 6-3. Both teams had some chances in the 4th quarter, but shots
were either off the mark or goalies were making saves.Goalies Alec
Shand and Yuri Larrabee both had great games in
and out of the net. This was a good win against a good team, and puts Exeter
back on track after a tough week.
