Exeter 7  Souhegan HS 4
Exeter, NH, Monday, May 8th - Led in the 2nd half by the scoring of Michael Scalise, the offensive spark by Bruce Hallett, and the incredible groundball work and overall hustle of Wes Chaput, Exeter defeated a spirited and aggressive Souhegan HS team 7-4. With all post-graduate players unable to play in this game because of New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association prohibition rules governing public high school play, Exeter was down five starting players. Somebody needed to step up after a very sleepy first half, and many of the guys did just that, especially Michael, Wes, and Bruce. While all of them are deserving of a game ball, the honor is being given to Wes Chaput. Wes was the engine that drove the Exeter team out of their first half doldrums and into a running and hustling club that scored six 2nd half goals. He seemed to pick up every ground ball that was anywhere near him, ran fast breaks, and also played excellent short stick defense. It was a Wes Chaput fast break pass to Michael Scalise that put Exeter on the scoreboard for the first time near the end of the 2nd quarter, giving Exeter a 1-1 tie going into halftime. Bruce Hallett fed Michael Scalise for a nice man-up goal to start a run of four unanswered 3rd period goals. Michael scored again unassisted, to be followed by unassisted goals by Sam Duprey and Bruce Hallett. Meanwhile, the defense of Brett Hughes, Kevin Crane, Jon Dwyer, and Nick and Chris Downer played extremely well. When a rare good shot was created, either Alec Shand (first half) or Yuri Larrabee (2nd half) were ready with a good save. Two of Souhegan's goals were when they were man-up, and their 4th goal was near the end of the game after Alex Katz and Michael Scalise each had scored to make it a 7-3 game. A Monday game is never easy after a tough Saturday game, especially with five starters gone from the lineup. It was a good win.
