Exeter 8  Portsmouth Abbey 4
Exeter, NH, Saturday, April 15th - The Exeter defense led by game ball winner Brett Hughes played smothering and aggressive lacrosse that held Portsmouth Abbey's offense to very few great shot opportunities. The starters limited Portsmouth to just one goal in the first half, and one man-down goal for the 3rd quarter, and left the game for the 2nd string D with an 8-2 lead at the 9-minute mark of the 4th quarter. Defensive kudos go out to Andrew Farrisey, Colin Murphy, Evan Crosby, Kevin Crane, Nick and Chris Downer, and goalies Alec Shand and Yuri Larrabee. Meanwhile the offense struggled again for the 2nd straight game. Despite singleton first quarter goals by Chris Duffy, Sam Duprey, and Michael Scalise, it was not an offense that was hitting on all cylinders. Too many missed opportunities or bad decisions continue to be made by a group with so much talent and experience. Four 2nd quarter penalties by Exeter kept the pressure on the defense and also led to the offense failing to score in that quarter. A 3-1 lead at halftime seemed very modest considering the apparent difference in talent between the two teams. To Exeter's credit, they played their best lacrosse in the 3rd quarter. Brett Hughes took a ground ball off the face-off and went coast to coast and scored unassisted within thirty seconds of the start of the 2nd half. After Portsmouth responded with a man-up goal, Exeter reeled off four unanswered goals to take a commanding 8-2 lead, and liberal substitution followed. Once again it was Duffy, Duprey, and Scalise doing the scoring. Sam Duprey finished with three goals, Chris Duffy with two scores, and Michael Scalise had two goals and two assists. This game was certainly an improvement from Wednesday's performance, but there is still a long way to go and much work to be done.
