Exeter 6  Pomfret School 5
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, April 19th - Exeter and Pomfret have played in close competitive games every year since this competition started, and this year turned out to be no different. Great goalie play by game ball winner Alec Shand and his counterpart for Pomfret in the first half seemed to set the tone for this being a low scoring affair. Exeter scored early on a fast break goal by Scott MacKenzie on a beautiful assist from Sam Duprey, and then took a 2-0 lead at the quarter when MacKenzie assisted Chris Duffy. Meanwhile, goalie Alec Shand was leading the BIG RED defense of Brett Hughes, Andrew Farrissey, Colin Murphy, Kevin Crane, Dwight Curtis, and Nick and Chris Downer to shutout ball for the first 15 minutes of the contest. Sam Duprey and Michael Scalise each scored in the 2nd quarter, to make the halftime lead 4-1 Exeter. Alec finished the half with 9 saves, some of them in spectacular fashion. Yuri Larrabee picked up in the goal for the 2nd half where Alec left off, and he and the defense also allowed only one goal for the first 15 minutes of the 2nd half. Meanwhile, Chris Dufffy scored his 2nd goal of the game early in the 3rd period to first give Exeter a temporary 5-1 lead, and eventually a 5-2 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter. Several opportunities to blow the game open for Exeter resulted in missed shots or good saves, and Pomfret just kept hanging tough. Exeter started helping the Pomfret comeback hopes by just not taking care of the ball on offense, making some silly turnovers and committing penalties. A man up goal by Pomfret at the 8-minute mark of the 4th quarter cut the lead to 5-3, and they made it a 5-4 game a short time later as the defense started to wear down a little. Scott MacKenzie made a great play on the ride and went in for an unassisted goal with under three minutes to play to give Exeter a more comfortable 6-4 margin. Another turnover and penalty allowed Pomfret to score in the last 15 seconds to account for the final 6-5 score. Once again kudos to fill-in faceoff man Andrew Farrissey and the wing play of Wes Chaput. The boys played hard, especially given they had a game the previous day. Click here to see game pics
