Exeter 8 Moses Brown 5
Providence, RI, Saturday, April 22nd
- Anytime you go on the road, play a good team with an undefeated record,
and come away with a victory, it is a very good day. This is exactly what
the Exeter lacrosse team did against a very motivated and competitive Moses
Brown team as the Big Red came away with a hard
fought 8-5 victory. The game was close the entire way as neither team was
able to put together an offensive spurt to pull away from the other. In fact,
there was never more than two consecutive goals from either team, and Exeter
did not allow Mo Brown to even score two in a row. The Mo Brown goalie had
an outstanding day, but so did Alec Shand and Yuri
Larrabee for Exeter. Every ground ball was a battle, and the 17 total
penalties (11 for Exeter) is an indicator of just how physical the game was
played. Exeter fell behind on a fast break goal in the first quarter, but
came back a few minutes later to tie the score before the first quarter ended.
Exeter's first goal was to become the prototypical goal for the game. After
a loose ball scramble, the always alert Michael Scalise looked
up, found an open Scott MacKenzie behind his defender, and
made a beautiful assist to Scott. This was to be the first
of Michael's four assists as well as the first of Scott's
four goals. While Exeter's MacKenzie, Duprey,
and Silberman each scored in the 2nd quarter, Mo Brown was
able to match each of those goals with one of their own. Two of their three
scores came on man-down situations for Exeter as the BIG
RED was called for FIVE 2nd period penalties. The third quarter was
Exeter's quarter. Eric Eberhart emerged as a key player in
Exeter controlling the ball and the flow of the game with his great faceoff
work. The defense, led by game
ball winner Colin Murphy, completely shut down the Mo Brown offense
for the entire quarter. Colin not only played great individual
defense on his attackman, but he also played great team defense, and was superb
at scooping ground balls and helping to clear the ball. Colin
and his fellow defenders would limit Mo Brown to just one second half goal
despite being man-down SIX times during the 2nd half. Meanwhile, Bruce
Hallett and Scott MacKenzie scored goals off of
Michael Scalise assists in the 3rd quarter, and another MacKenzie
from Scalise goal in the 4th quarter gave Exeter a 2-goal
cushion. A final goal by Sam Duprey on a Stephen
Moulton assist came during the final minute when Mo Brown was scrambling
and doubling to try and gain possession.
