Exeter 7 Kimball Union 8
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, May 10th
- Once again Exeter's overall offense and ball control in particular were
major factors leading to difficulty scoring against a solid KUA team who came
ready for the upset. The defense played well in the first half despite four
man-down situations, a few fast breaks, and KUA dominating time of possession
due to Exeter offensive turnovers and poor shooting. Down by 3-2 at halftime,
Exeter started off the 3rd quarter well with three unanswered goals to take
a 5-3 lead and all the momentum. However, instead of busting the game open,
Exeter let KUA back into it by not being able to win a faceoff and continuing
to give them offensive opportunities. A late 3rd quarter goal after Exeter's
sixth penalty of the game allowed KUA to tie the score 5-5 going into the
4th. KUA scored again in a man-up situation early in the 4th, and then took
a 2-goal lead 7-5 with only 8 minutes remaining. To Exeter's credit, they
battled back with a Sam Duprey solo dodge and fast break
goal by Chris Duffy to knot the score 7-7 with under four
minutes to play. A great pass and catch to a closely guarded middie on a clear
led to an 8th and final KUA goal at the 2-minute mark, and Exeter's efforts
to tie it were thwarted with a couple of good saves. This was a disappointing
loss, but KUA deserves credit for a well played and well coached game. Click
