Exeter 8 Holderness 4
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, May 24th
- Exeter defeated an always tough Holderness team by the score of 8-4. Exeter
played one of their best and most complete games of the season from start
to finish. The Holderness defense has been stingy all year while playing in
front of an All-American goalie, but Exeter stayed patient, moved the ball
well, and had some excellent looks at the cage all game. Scott Mackenzie
scored early in the 1st quarter and Michael Scalise made
it 2-0 just a couple of minutes later. The Exeter defense led by game
ball winner Andrew Farrissey would not let Holderness feel comfortable
at the offensive end. Andrew not only played great man-to-man
defense, but he was always in position to help out, and he had his best clearing
day of the season. A tough riding attack led to numerous turnovers and great
ball control for Exeter. In addition, Mike Kelly was just
dominating on faceoffs. When Holderness settled it into their offensive zone,
Andrew, Colin Murphy, Brett Hughes, Evan Crosby, Kevin Crane,
and the short stick defenders played swarming and aggressive defense. After
George Negroponte made it 3-0 early in the 2nd quarter off
of a Chris Duffy feed, the game became a little sloppy and
unsettled. It was off one of these unsettled situations that Holderness scored
their 1st goal with just under three minutes until halftime. Exeter came out
strong in the 3rd quarter and scored three unanswered goals. Stephen
Moulton and Chris Duffy both went unassisted, and
Chris Silberman cashed in on a MacKenzie
assist. When Chris Silberman scored his 2nd goal of the game
early in the 4th quarter to make it a 7-1 margin, all starters were removed.
Holderness kept battling and helped by five 4th quarter Exeter penalties managed
to score three 4th quarter goals. Alec Shand and Yuri
Larrabee played very well in the goal, and did some of their best
work this season on clearing. It was a satisfying and complete victory.
