Exeter 13 Cathedral HS 2
Exeter, NH, Tuesday, April 18th
- For the first time in school history, Exeter played a team visiting from
California. The BIG RED showed excellent hospitality in the first quarter
as the hustling but less experienced Dons from Cathedral HS of San Diego were
able to hold their own and finish the quarter tied 1-1. However, the flood
gates opened in the 2nd quarter as Exeter started playing quality lacrosse
all over the field. The spark that seemed to change everything was the faceoff
work of Andrew Farrissey with the great wing play by
Wes Chaput. At the 7 minute mark of the 2nd, Andrew
put the ball out to Wes, Wes then scooped
it up and ran a fast break, and then he assisted Scott MacKenzie
for the dunk. This exact scenario repeated itself 15 seconds later, and Exeter
just started hitting on all cylinders. By halftime, the score was 7-1 with
game ball winner Scott MacKenzie
having already scored four 2nd quarter goals. Scott finished
the game with six goals and one assist with some sprectacular shooting. Exeter
picked up where they left off at the start of the third quarter. The defense
was in complete control of the Don's offense, and Cathedral was also having
trouble clearing the ball. Chris Duffy, Sam Duprey, Bruce Hallett, and Scott
MacKenzie (2) combined for five quick goals in the first 6 minutes of the
3rd quarter to put the game at 12-1 and out of reach. All the starters watched
the 2nd string play very good lacrosse for more than a quarter and a half.
Standouts among them included John Dwyer on defense, Evan Rose and Andrew
Hong in the midfield, and Dwight Curtis at long pole. It should also be noted
that middie Tom Clayton scored his first career goal unassisted to finish
out the team's 13 goal output.
