Exeter 5  Bridgton 7
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, March 29th - Having had one outdoor practice as a full team just the previous day, it was certainly a daunting task to face a very strong all PG Bridgton Academy team already four games into their schedule. Everything was played as a full fledged game despite the Big Red having spent about 20 minutes total on man-up offense and man-down defense the day before. Bridgton went out on top 1-0 at the 7 minute mark, scored again when we were man down a minute later, and then made it 3-0 with 4 minutes to play in the first quarter. After a time out to regroup, Exeter settled down nicely. Scott MacKenzie notched Exeter's first goal just before the end of the first quarter to make it a 3-1 game. Exeter played very well in the 2nd quarter as Chris Duffy scored unassisted just a minute into the period, and then Chris found Michael Scalise open on the crease a minute later to tie the game at 3-3. Meanwhile, the Red defense was holding the potent Bridgton attack scoreless for an 11 minute stretch. Bridgton went ahead 4-3 just before the half. The second half was very well played. Chris Silberman tied the game at 4-4 on an unassisted goal in transition, but Bridgton responded to go ahead by 1 again 3 minutes later. Starting the 4th quarter down by 1, Mike Kelley beat the goalie on a hard bounce shot to make it a 5-5 game. It stayed that way for more than half the quarter until Bridgton found an open man uncovered to go ahead 6-5. Another goal late in the game made it a final score of 7-5. This was a very impressive performance against a quality club this early into the season. Kudos to the entire defense is in order, especially long poles Colin Murphy and Evan Crosby, and short stick defenders Chris and Nick Downer. Alec Shand and Yuri Larrabee split the time in the goal and both played very well. While there is a lot of work to do, there is also a great deal to feel good about. Click here to see game pics
