Exeter 5  Andover 6
Andover, MA, Saturday, May 27th - This was 72nd time Exeter and Andover competed in lacrosse, and it was another great battle in which Andover prevailed 6-5. The series now stands at Exeter 36 – Andover 35- and 1 tie. This was a physical and defensive game that featured outstanding play by both goalies. Alec Shand finished an outstanding year and career with many saves, some of them right on his doorstep. Unfortunately, the Andover goalie was also outstanding, and he was able to limit Exeter to just five goals. This was a game in which Exeter once again started poorly and was not able to notch the first goal until the 9-minute mark of the 2nd quarter. Alec and the defense of Colin Murphy, Brett Hughes, and Andrew Farrissey kept Exeter in the game, and we were able to tie it up 3-3 at the half. Michael Scalise scored himself and assisted one of Scott MacKenzie's two first half goals. Michael finishes his outstanding Exeter career as the 7th leading all time scorer and 2nd highest scoring midfielder. The 2nd half was a repeat of the first. Andover scored first and Exeter was always playing catch-up. Scott MacKenzie notched his third goal of the game to tie the contest at 4-4 just before the end of the 3rd quarter, and it all came down to the last 12 minutes. Once again, Andover scored to go ahead on another unsettled situation off of a face-off, and Exeter was playing from behind. When Chris Silberman scored to tie the game 5-5, there was only 5 minutes to play. Amazingly, another mistake off of a face-off scramble led to an Andover fast break goal just seconds after Exeter tied the game. The last four minutes featured intense physical play and several great scoring opportunities. One fan counted seven pipe shots for Exeter during the contest, and one of them came in the last couple of minutes that would have tied the score. The Exeter team played very hard, but just was unable to hold off the upset minded Andover team. click here to see game pics
