Exeter 2  Loomis Chaffee 6
Exeter, NH, Saturday, April 30th - On another rain soaked afternoon, Exeter suffered their first loss of the season to a very good Loomis Chaffee team by the score 6-2. This was a hard fought and well played defensive struggle from the beginning with the game going scoreless for the first 11 minutes. Loomis went up 1-0 near the end of the first quarter on a feed to the crease as Exeter was transitioning from their man-down to all even defense. Loomis followed it up with two more goals within the first few minutes of the second period to go up 3-0. Exeter goalie Matt Harrigan was heroic in making several fantastic saves during the first half to keep Loomis from opening up an even greater lead. At the offensive end, Exeter was unable to generate much during the entire first half due to solid defense by Loomis and somewhat tentative offense by Exeter. Loomis scored once more at the 3-minute mark to take a 4-0-halftime lead. Exeter clearly needed to change strategy and make the game a more up-tempo and physical contest, and the Big Red players responded perfectly. Exeter went out in the 2nd half and played with intensity and a zeal that really took Loomis by surprise. Exeter took control of the pace of the game and momentum was changing. A very poor referee's call on a clean hard hit was followed by an equally poor unsportsmanlike penalty on an Exeter player resulted in Exeter being two men down. This two-man advantage allowed Loomis to score their 5th goal and take a 5-0 lead. Exeter did not let down. Instead, their determination increased, and finally Travis Glennon broke the ice for Exeter's first goal almost 4 minutes into the period. Brett Davis, who did fabulous work facing off, put in a low to high blazer near the end of the 3rd quarter to make it a 5-2 ballgame. Exeter continued to play great lacrosse in the 4th quarter. With more than five minutes left in the game, Exeter had a man advantage situation due to a Loomis penalty. The man-up offense ran a play to perfection that resulted in a one on one with the goalie. Unfortunately, the Loomis goalie made a fabulous save to prevent Exeter from closing the gap to two goals. Exeter kept up the pressure despite Loomis trying to take time off the clock during every possession. Michael Scalise made a nice move on a dodge for a close in shot and clanged one off the pipe. Travis Glennon made a nice feed to Mark Scalise on the crease, but the shot stuck in the mud. Jon Higgins and Sam Duprey generated nice shot opportunities as well, but they were a bit wide. This was not the same team or the same offense from the first half, but it was to be too little too late. Loomis' final goal came near the 2-minute mark at the end of the game when Exeter was in a full pressure scramble and double team mode trying to get the ball back from a stalling Loomis team. The defense led by Matt Harrigan in goal played extremely well. Long poles Brett Hughes, Evan Crosby, Coleman Peeke, Frank Andrews, Pat Flynn, Ian Drummond, and Kevin Crane all played well. Short stick defenders Kirk Bansak, Bruce Hallett, and Chris Downer were equally tough. Exeter learned a lot about themselves in this game against one of the best teams in New England. We are ready to get back on a winning streak immediately. Click here for game pics.
