Exeter 9 Winchendon 1
Exeter, NH, Tuesday, May 10th
- On a very rare Tuesday game, Exeter defeated a previously undefeated Winchendon
team 9-1 in another impressive display of defensive lacrosse. Winchendon was
an athletic group that had averaged over 11 goals per game on their way to
an 8-0 record going into yesterday's game. Led by game
ball winner Coleman Peeke, the Exeter defense completely neutralized
the Winchendon attack and overall offense. Coleman and his long pole
contingent of Ian Drummond, Frank Andrews, Pat Flynn, Chris Downer, Kevin
Crane, and Shivpal Virk kept relentless pressure on the Winchendon
attackmen. Very few quality shots were generated, and often the ball was stripped
away and cleared effectively by good passing up the field. Short stick defenders
Kirk Bansak and Bruce Hallett teamed with long stick middies
Brett Hughes and Evan Crosby to negate the Winchendon midfield
offense just as effectively. Matt Harrigan, Eric Hassett, and Alec
Shand all played well in the goal, with much of their responsibility weighted
towards directing the clear after a defensive takeaway. The offensive stars
of the day were Travis Glennon with 4 goals and 1 assist and Michael
Scalise with another hat trick for him. This is Michael's team
leading 5th game with 3 or more goals. After jumping to a 5-0 halftime lead,
liberal substitution ensued, and everyone continued to play hard and well.
Winchendon deserves a lot of thanks for agreeing to the change in the game
date so that Exeter's previously rained out Tabor game can be scheduled into
the original Winchendon date of Wednesday, May 18th. Exeter has the unusual
task of playing back to back games on consecutive days when we visit Kimball
Union Academy for an East I league contest on 5/11.
