Exeter 9  Tabor 3
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, May 18th - Game ball winner Mark Scalise wasted no time getting started on his record scoring day when he dodged Tabor's best defenseman for an unassisted goal just 35 seconds after Travis Glennon won the opening faceoff. This was the first of his 9th grade record 5 goal, 1 assist outburst that led the offense in Exeter's 9-3 defeat of league rival Tabor. Marks' other four goals were assisted by a variety of teammates that included his brother Michael (2), Brett Davis, and even defenseman Coleman Peeke. In addition to his assist to Mark, Coleman played a magnificent game shutting down Tabor's high scoring attackman Kevin Donohue, while also gobbling up ground balls and clearing effectively. Defensive linemate Ian Drummond equaled Coleman's accomplishments on the other side of the goal by also neutralizing his potent attacker, and this enabled Exeter to cause many turnovers. Tabor's attackmen are the key to their offense, so once Coleman, Ian, Kevin Crane, and the rest of the defenseman accomplished their job, middie defenders Kirk Bansak, Brett Hughes, Bruce Hallett, Chris Downer, and Evan Crosby were free to apply real defensive pressure. Especially in the 2nd half, the caused turnovers and a very effective ride by the attack unit of Michael Scalise, Mark Scalise, Jon Higgins, and Chris Mayer led to several unsettled goals for the Exeter offense. Mark Scalise was the chief beneficiary of these unsettled situations, and he made the most of these opportunities by finishing nicely against a very good Tabor goalkeeper. Exeter goalie Matt Harrigan played very well in and out of the cage, and was instrumental in Exeter having little trouble clearing the ball. Other offensive players of note are Michael Scalise with 2 goals and 2 assists and Travis Glennon with 1 goal and 1 assist. Travis was also 7 for 7 facing off, a key to Exeter controlling the ball most of the game. This was a solid win against a dangerous league opponent, with the 2nd half containing some of Exeter's best transition play of the season.
