Exeter 6  St John's Prep 5
Exeter, NH, Monday, May 23rd - Not surprisingly, this was another cold and wet day for a lacrosse game this season. This game had all the elements and conditions of a trap game for the BIG RED squad. The St John's prep opponent was surprisingly strong and highly motivated to notch their first ever win against Exeter, the playing conditions were very poor and conducive to a sloppy slugfest type of game, Exeter was just coming off a physically tough and emotional Saturday game against Deerfield, and a few key players were banged up and less than 100%. To the team's credit, Exeter did what they had to do to notch their 14th win of the season. By no means was it pretty, but St John's Prep is indeed deserving of their status as one of the better teams in the Massachusetts Public School DI league (currently ranked 8th), with very physical and tough athletes. Game ball winner Ian Drummond led the defense that almost completely shut down a high scoring attack unit that features the two top scorers in the strong Catholic Conference. Ian and his defensive mate Coleman Peeke applied tremendous pressure all day, created turnovers, and did not allow their men a good shot the entire game. To St John's credit, they went to their middies to try and find a way to score, and they were able to notch 3 first half goals to match Exeter's first half output at the midway point. Exeter never really got their offense in gear due to sloppy conditions, poor footing, aggressive defense by St Johns, and some missed shot opportunities. Travis Glennon (2g,2a), Michael Scalise (2g), and a banged up Mark Scalise (1g,2a) led the offense. Chris Mayer continues to play well, and notched the game-winning goal with almost 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. As playing conditions grew worse, the game became more physical and defensive in nature, so neither team scored in the 4th quarter. As always, the close defense of Ian Drummond, Coleman Peeke, Frank Andrews, and Kevin Crane played extremely well. Short stick defenders Bruce Hallett, Kirk Bansak, and Chris Downer were very effective, and the long pole duo of Brett Hughes and Evan Crosby continue to harass opponent midfielders relentlessly. This was a tough opponent at this point in the schedule, and it is a win that we are happy to have behind us.
