Exeter 8 Portsmouth Abbey 5
Portsmouth, RI, Saturday, April 16th
- Exeter defeated a stubborn, physical, and well-coached Portsmouth Abbey
team by the score of 8-5 on a sun drenched beautiful afternoon in a setting
overlooking Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay. The Exeter team took a while
to recover from the 2.5-hour bus ride as indicated by a slow start that led
to a 2-1 deficit after the 1st quarter. Middie Sam Duprey scored his
2nd goal of the afternoon off a beautiful assist from line mate Brett Davis
to knot the score at 2-2 half way through the 2nd quarter. This was to be
the first of four unanswered goals for Exeter that established a lead that
would never be relinquished. The 3rd quarter was by far Exeter's best. Led
by game ball winner Travis Glennon's
domination on faceoffs as well as his offensive leadership, the BIG
RED played excellent lacrosse. Travis scored once and assisted
twice in the 3rd quarter, and he set a physical tone that lifted the team
by making some big hits in loose ball situations. He finished the day with
1 goal, 3 assists, and 6 of 9 on faceoffs. Exeter's tenacious ride was also
a key to our better play in the 2nd half. Attackmen Michael Scalise,
Mark Scalise, Jon Higgins, and Chris Mayer all worked
hard and successfully to keep the ball in our offensive zone. At the defensive
end, Exeter did not yield much in the way of offensive opportunities for the
Abbeys. A few clearing mistakes of our own resulted in a couple of Abbey's
goals, but overall it was a very solid effort by all the long poles and short
stick defenders. Offensive leaders were Travis Glennon (1g,3a), Sam
Duprey (3g, 1a), and Michael Scalise (3g). While it was not Exeter's
best performance, it was a very nice win against a tough undefeated competitor,
coming off a long bus ride, and following an emotionally draining OT win on
Wednesday. Click
