Exeter, NH, Saturday, May 14th - Exeter's BIG RED pushed their season record to 12-2 with a relatively easy 9-3 victory over NMH before a relatively large reunion class crowd. Once again, it was a stifling defense and hungry ground ball work that led the way to victory. Prep Mark Scalise scored first on an assist from Chris Mayer, and then Travis Glennon pumped one in to make it 2-0 half way through the first quarter. However, Exeter went the next 12 minutes without scoring while NMH managed a man-up goal to make the score 2-1. With 7 minutes left until halftime, Michael Scalise scored off an assist from brother Mark, and the 3-1 score was the halftime mark. While defenseman Ian Drummond, Coleman Peeke, Frank Andrews, and Pat Flynn shut down the NMH attack, long poles Bret Hughes, Chris Downer, and d-middies Kirk Bansak and Bruce Hallett similarly dominated the NMH middies. With great faceoff work by Travis Glennon, Brett Davis, and Phil Clark, Exeter was able to control the ball, but just could not finish off some good shot opportunities. The 2nd half was a different story for the offense that was sparked by game ball winner Chris Mayer. Brett Davis and Chris each scored unassisted to start the quarter, and then Chris scored again unassisted after Mark Scalise's 2nd goal of the game. The four unanswered 3rd period goals gave Exeter a commanding 7-1 lead going into the final period. Once again, Chris was the sparkplug with some great ground ball work, excellent riding, and then the prettiest assist of the day to Michael Scalise off of a fast break. When Michael scored his 3rd goal of the game a minute later, the 9-1 score was clearly insurmountable. Everyone had the opportunity to play a lot in this game, and all players, including the NMH opponents, kept playing hard and tough until the final whistle.
