Exeter 7 Kimball Union 4
Exeter, NH, Wednesday, May 11th
- Exeter had the difficult task of playing back-to-back lacrosse games on
consecutive days, with today's game on the road against a hot KUA squad. Despite
a bus trip to the game of over 3 hours that included a flat tire, the BIG
RED came away with a hard fought 7-4 victory. KUA was not the same
team that started their season 0-4 because of their inability to get on a
field and practice. Instead, they were an athletic, well-coached, and aggressive
team that played with the confidence that comes from winning 4 of their last
5 games going into the Exeter game. After a quick warm-up due to our late
arrival, Exeter came out surprisingly strong in the opening minutes. Within
four minutes of the start, Exeter had a 3-0 lead on goals by Travis Glennon,
Brett Davis, and Michael Scalise. KUA scored a 1st period goal
in a man-up situation, but Michael responded a few minutes later to
put Exeter up 4-1 at the end of the first period. KUA showed real determination
not to let the game get out of hand, and the effects of the bus ride and the
previous day's game seemed to finally show in Exeter's 2nd and 3rd quarter
play. While Exeter continued to dominate the ball and generate good shot opportunities
in the 2nd quarter, we only managed a lone Jon Higgins goal on a Travis
Glennon assist. KUA matched that one goal to send the teams into halftime
with Exeter leading 5-2. Exeter played one of their most lackluster quarters
of the year in the 3rd period and allowed KUA right back into the game. To
KUA's credit, they played with intensity and intelligence, managed to control
the 3rd quarter, and made it a 5-4 game going into the fourth. Game
ball winner Travis Glennon finished the day with 1goal and 3 assists,
and also was 7 out of 7 on his face-off attempts. Travis scored within
the first couple of minutes of the quarter, and assisted Michael Scalise
(3g) a few mintes later to give Exeter their final 7-4 margin. Travis
was all over the field picking up ground balls and doing what needed to be
done to preserve victory. The defense continues to play extremely well. Coleman
Peeke, Ian Drummond, Kevin Crane, Brett Hughes, Evan Crosby, and short
sticks Kirk Bansak, Bruce Hallett, and Chris Downer all deserve
kudos. Matt Harrigan went the distance in the goal and played very
well. This was neither an easy team nor ideal conditions from a midweek travel
standpoint, so this victory was well earned. Click
