Exeter 8 Holderness 4
Holderness, NH, Wednesday, May 25th
- On another damp and dreary game day, Exeter played very solid lacrosse to
defeat the always athletic, motivated, and well-coached Holderness squad 8-4.
Holderness came into the game sporting a 4 game winning streak that included
a sound defeat of Tabor the game before, and a 4-1league record for 2nd place
behind Exeter. With this win, Exeter secured the league title for Eastern
New England Division I. This league is comprised of Exeter, Andover, Holderness,
Tabor, Pomfret, KUA, and Cushing. The Scalise brother's combined for the first
goal as Michael assisted Mark just less than four minutes into
the contest. Sam Duprey found Jon Higgins for a nice goal a
few minutes later to give Exeter their 2-0 lead at the end of one period.
The second quarter was played evenly 2-2 as both teams battled hard all over
the field. Travis Glennon assisted Michael Scalise and Chris
Mayer scored on a solo dodge to counter a Holderness fast break goal and
another Holderness goal with just under two minutes remaining until halftime.
Holderness scored first in the 3rd quarter to make it a 4-3 contest, but then
Exeter took over the game. Travis Glennon responded to the Holderness
goal less than a minute later, and close defenseman Coleman Peeke, Ian
Drummond, Frank Andrews, and Kevin Crane really turned up the pressure.
Middie defenders Kirk Bansak, Bruce Hallett, Chris Downer, and long
poles Brett Hughes and Evan Crosby gave the Holderness middies
zero good looks at the cage. The offense responded with four unanswered goals
to push the game out of reach when it reached the 8-3 mark. The exclamation
point came on game ball winner Davis
Moore's sweep and perfect bounce shot into the corner for Exeter's
final tally. Davis and his 2nd middie line played great lacrosse for
much of the 4th quarter by completely controlling the ball on offense and
not giving Holderness even a sniff at a potential comeback. Although this
was only Davis' 5th goal of the season, he undoubtedly has the highest
shooting percentage on the team. Holderness picked up one final goal in the
4th quarter, but Exeter prevailed.
