Exeter 11 Cushing 2
Exeter, NH, Saturday, April 9th
- On a beautiful New England afternoon, Exeter's BIG RED lax team made their
season record 2-0 with an impressive 11-2 win against Cushing Academy. Once
again, it took the offense a little while to get started against a physical
and big opponent. It was the 2nd midfield combo of prep Tom Clayton
with a beautiful assist to senior Davis Moore to get Exeter on the
board with a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game. Two minutes later, game
ball winner middie Sam Duprey (1goal, 3 assists) fired home a bullet
off a nice feed from line mate Brett Davis. Sam not only figured into
four of Exeter's goals on the day, but he played great defense and really
helped run a smooth offense. Goals by Mark and Michael Scalise quickly
extended the 2-0 Exeter lead at the end of the first quarter to 4-0 margin
within a few minutes into the start of the 2nd period. Exeter never looked
back as they dominated the ball through great groundball work and the continued
excellence at facing off by Travis Glennon and Brett Davis.
Another important aspect to Exeter's domination of the ball was the excellent
riding by the attack and midfield units. As a result, Cushing had great difficulty
clearing the ball into their offensive zone and mounting a consistent attack.
When Cushing was able to get the ball on offense, the defensive unit of Coleman
Peeke, Pat Flynn, Ian Drummond, Chris Downer, Kevin
Crane, and Shiv Virk yielded few quality shots. Long pole middies
Brett Hughes and Evan Crosby combined with short stick defenders
Kirk Bansak and Bruce Hallett to stifle the Cushing offensive
midfielders and to dominate loose balls. Exeter had a comfortable 6-0 halftime
lead and attackman Jon Higgins almost personally made sure the 2nd
half would not be much different. His three-goal 2nd half outburst came off
of three different teammates assisting Jon, who always seems to be in the
right spot at the right time. Other offensive leaders for the game besides
the previously mentioned Jon Higgins and Sam Duprey were Michael
Scalise (4g, 1a), Mark Scalise (2g, 1a), and defenseman Chris
Downer with two beautiful assists. It was a very solid and impressive
effort by the entire squad.
