Exeter 10  Brewster  5
Exeter, NH, Monday, May 2nd - As game time approached, the clouds came and it started to rain for the 4th consecutive game. Nevertheless, Exeter came out strong in the first quarter against a surprisingly strong Brewster Academy team. Brewster had already recorded wins against DI opponents Holderness and Cushing, and their only prep school loss was a 2-goal deficit to Andover. Sparked by the great faceoff work of Travis Glennon, Brett Davis, and Phil Clark, Exeter was able to maintain possession of the ball and apply offensive pressure. High scorer for the day Michael Scalise (4g, 1a) scored the first goal of the game unassisted less than two minutes into the contest. Mark Scalise assisted Jon Higgins five minutes later, and then Jon did the assisting for Travis Glennon for the most beautiful goal of the day off a perfectly executed "Alaska" play. Although their were several good candidates for the award, Jon Higgins gets the game ball. Not only did Jon contribute a goal and two assists on the day, but more importantly he exhibited great overall hustle on the ride, was tough on ground balls, handled the ball well under pressure, and made good decisions in transition. Michael Scalise's 2nd goal of the game gave Exeter a 4-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Deserving special mention is the "hockey" defensive unit of Ian Drummond, Kevin Crane, Chris Downer, Brett Hughes, and Evan Crosby. These long poles applied great pressure to the high scoring Brewster attack and held them to just one goal through the first half of play. Matt Harrigan was again stellar in the nets for the first half, and Alec Shand ably replaced him for the remainder of the game. Exeter increased their lead to a comfortable 6-1 halftime margin on 2nd period goals by Michael and Mark Scalise. Travis Glennon and Michael Scalise made the score 8-1 midway through the 3rd quarter, and liberal substitution was well under way. Exeter's last quarter and a half was a little lackluster and lacking in intensity, but the outcome was certainly never in doubt. In addition to Michael Scalise's big offensive output, Travis Glennon finished with 3 goals and an assist, Mark Scalise and Chris Mayer each chipped in with a goal and an assist, and Sam Duprey added two nice assists. Two big games coming up in the always strong Navy Prep on Wednesday, and then league opponent Tabor away on Saturday. Click here for game pics.
